So… What Is Hypnotherapy?
Updated: Oct 4
If you’ve never experienced hypnotherapy before, you may have a few questions or even some doubts about what it actually involves. Is it really possible to be hypnotised? Will you lose control? What does it feel like? And, perhaps most importantly, how can it actually help?
Hypnotherapy is often surrounded by myths and misconceptions. So let’s take a step back and look at what really happens, what hypnosis is, and what you can expect from a hypnotherapy session.
Okay… But What Actually Is Hypnotherapy?
If you’ve never experienced hypnotherapy before, the word itself can sound a little mysterious. Maybe you picture someone swinging a pocket watch in front of your face, counting backwards from ten, or making you cluck like a chicken. Don’t worry, there’s no pocket watch involved, and you’re not going to wake up wondering where your clothes have gone.
In reality, hypnotherapy is much more down to earth.
You know that feeling when you’re driving somewhere you know really well, completely lost in your thoughts, and suddenly you think, “Wait… I’m driving. Where am I?” You’ve somehow travelled the whole way without consciously noticing every turn, every traffic light or every mile. You were awake, alert and in control the entire time. Your attention was simply somewhere else.
That’s a little closer to what hypnosis can feel like.
During hypnosis, you’re not asleep and you’re not unconscious. You remain aware of what is happening and, importantly, you remain in control.
Hypnotherapy simply uses this natural state of focused attention as part of the therapeutic process. It can help you explore the way you think, feel and respond, while creating space for new perspectives and different ways of responding.
And that’s the interesting part. You may have already experienced a state like this without ever calling it hypnosis. You just didn’t have a name for it.
Okay, But Where Does the Therapy Come In?
So, if hypnosis is a natural state of focused attention, where does the “therapy” part come in?
Hypnotherapy combines therapeutic conversation with hypnosis to help you explore the way you think, feel and respond. It can create space to look at patterns, habits, beliefs and reactions that may have been running in the background for a long time.
And this is an important part of how I work.
For me, hypnotherapy is not about putting you into a trance, reading you a script and hoping for the best. You are not simply lying there while I do all the work.
We talk first. We explore what is going on for you, what you would like to change and what might be keeping you stuck. The hypnosis is then used as part of that therapeutic process, in a way that is tailored to you.
Because there is no one-size-fits-all approach to people. And there certainly shouldn't be one for the way we work with their minds.
How Does Hypnosis Work?
The process of hypnosis typically involves three simple stages:
Induction: This is where we slow things down. I’ll gently guide you into a relaxed and focused state, using things like breathing, visualisation and gentle guidance. You’re awake, you can hear me, and you’re still completely in control.
Suggestion: Once you’re relaxed and focused, this is where the therapeutic work happens. I’ll use therapeutic suggestions and techniques suited to the area we’re working on, whether that’s anxiety, low mood, confidence, sleep, habits or something else. The session is guided by what you need support with, so the approach can be adapted to you and your goals.
Awakening: And then we gently bring things to an end. No dramatic countdown, no clicking fingers, no “wake up!” moment. I’ll simply guide you back to your usual level of awareness, giving you a moment to reconnect with the room and take in how relaxed you feel. You’ll be fully aware, fully in control and ready to carry on with your day.
What Can Hypnosis Feel Like?
Now for another question I get quite often: “But what will I actually feel?”
The honest answer? There isn’t one.
You might feel deeply relaxed. Your body may feel heavier or lighter. You might notice warmth, a change in your sense of time, or simply become very focused on what you are hearing and experiencing.
And sometimes… you might not notice much at all.
You might even be lying there thinking, “Am I actually hypnotised?”
Yes, you can be.
There is no single way to experience hypnosis. You don’t have to feel completely “out of it”, and you don’t have to experience some dramatic trance-like sensation for it to be working.
Everyone experiences hypnosis differently, and that’s perfectly normal.
Benefits of Hypnotherapy
1. Reduces Stress and Anxiety
When your mind is constantly running through every possible scenario, it can be exhausting. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can help you understand your thinking patterns, calm an overactive mind and gradually develop more helpful ways of responding to anxious thoughts.
Sometimes life simply feels like too much. Hypnotherapy can help you step out of that constant “fight or flight” feeling, create more space in your mind and develop healthier ways of managing everyday pressure.
2. Improves Sleep Quality
If you struggle with insomnia or restless nights, hypnotherapy can help. By promoting relaxation and reducing anxiety, hypnotherapy can improve your sleep quality.
During a session, I provide suggestions that encourage a peaceful mindset, making it easier for you to fall asleep and stay asleep.
3. Enhances Focus and Concentration
In our fast-paced world, maintaining focus can be challenging. Hypnotherapy can help improve your concentration and mental clarity.
By training your mind to eliminate distractions, you can enhance your productivity. This is especially beneficial for students or professionals who need to stay sharp and focused.
4. Supports Weight Loss Efforts
Many people struggle with weight loss due to emotional eating or unhealthy habits. Hypnotherapy can help you change your relationship with food.
Through positive suggestions, you can develop healthier eating habits and a more positive body image. This can lead to sustainable weight loss and improved overall health.
5. Helps Overcome Phobias and Fears
Phobias can be debilitating, affecting your daily life. Hypnotherapy can help you confront and overcome these fears.
By addressing the underlying causes of your phobia, you can learn to manage your reactions and reduce anxiety. This can lead to a more fulfilling life without the limitations of fear.
6. Confidence & Self-Belief
Confidence is not about suddenly believing you are amazing at everything. It is about developing a stronger sense of trust in yourself. Hypnotherapy can help you work with the thoughts and patterns that keep you playing small and begin building a more supportive inner dialogue.
7. Smoking Cessation
Stopping smoking is not simply about deciding not to have another cigarette. There are habits, routines and associations involved too. Hypnotherapy can help you change the way you think about smoking and support you in creating a different relationship with the habit.
8. Addiction & Recovery
Addictive behaviours can become deeply connected to emotions, habits and ways of coping. Solution Focused Hypnotherapy can support you in looking beyond the behaviour itself, developing healthier coping strategies and focusing on the person and life you are working towards.
9. Unhelpful Habits & Patterns
We all have things we do almost automatically. Some habits are useful, others stop being helpful somewhere along the way. Hypnotherapy can help bring these patterns into awareness and create space for different choices and responses.
10. Pain Relief
Pain can affect much more than the body. It can influence your mood, sleep, energy and everyday life. Hypnotherapy may help you change the way your mind responds to pain, reduce tension and develop greater relaxation around uncomfortable sensations. It can be particularly useful as part of a wider approach to managing ongoing or persistent pain.
Hypnotherapy is not a replacement for medical assessment or treatment, but it can be a valuable complementary tool for helping you feel more comfortable and more in control of your experience of pain.
What to Expect During a Hypnotherapy Session

Common Misconceptions About Hypnotherapy
Despite its benefits, there are several misconceptions about hypnotherapy. Here are a few common myths:
Myth 1: You Lose Control: Many people believe that hypnosis means losing control. In reality, you remain aware and in control throughout the process.
Myth 2: It Only Works for Certain People: Hypnotherapy can be effective for a wide range of individuals. It is not limited to a specific type of person.
Myth 3: It is a Magic Fix: While hypnotherapy can be powerful, it is not a magic solution. It often requires commitment and practice to see lasting results.
